Furnace Maintenance Checklist for Fall
Before the first cold front of the season arrives, a little furnace maintenance can save you from an unexpected breakdown — and a much bigger repair bill. Here's what to check.
1. Replace or Clean the Air Filter
A dirty filter restricts airflow, forces your furnace to work harder, and can shorten its lifespan. Check it monthly during heavy use and replace as needed.
2. Clear the Area Around Vents and Returns
Furniture, rugs, and clutter blocking vents or return air grilles reduce efficiency and can cause uneven heating throughout the house.
3. Test the System Before You Need It
Don't wait for the first freezing night to find out your furnace won't start. Run it for a few minutes on a mild day so there's time to schedule a repair if something's wrong.
4. Listen and Smell
Unusual noises or a burning smell when the furnace first kicks on (beyond a brief, mild odor from dust burning off) can be a sign something needs attention.
5. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up
A seasonal maintenance visit covers what you can't check yourself — electrical connections, ignition components, and overall system safety.
